Not Just a Barber by Bobby Henderson Jr. I
am a 30 year old barber-stylist born and raised in Atlanta, GA. My passion is
hair. My goal is to bring creativity, excitement, and entertainment to the hair
industry. For the past 14 years, I have been making a name for myself in the hair
industry. I've gone from cutting my classmates hair in the kitchen in 1993, to
opening my own salon in 2002. I started cutting hair in my parent's basement
at the age of 13. After high school, I honed my skills at Samverly Barber Styling
School where I won second place in a student competition after only being in school
for two weeks. That's when I realized that I had a special talent, and it was
then that I decided to focus on competing in international hair shows. I consider
hair shows to be a way not only to showcase your techniques, but also a way to
polish your skills. I have won several awards including: Oster Golden Clipper
Award (2004), Bronner Brothers Best Man Competition-1st Place (2001), Best Barber
in Atlanta-2nd Place (1999), Bronner Bros. King Royale-Top Ten (1999), Fastest
Barber in Atlanta-1st Place (1998), All About Hair-2nd Place (1997), and Atlanta's
Finest-2nd Place (1996). The unbelievable recognition I received motivated me
to keep perfecting new styles and to compete with stylist from all over country.
I have been competing in hair shows for the past 8 years. I have worked
in several different hair salons and barber shops throughout the city of Atlanta
and managed my own salon for 2 years. At each of these shops, I set the standard
for other barbers to follow. I quickly gained a large clientele that remained
loyal because of my creative and unique hair designs. Outside
of just working in the salon, I am actively involved in the hair industry. I have
worked as a platform artist for Wahl Clippers, and Ampro Gel Industries; as an
educator for Revlon Professional and Bronner Brothers. I was the featured stylist
for Soft Sheen Carson at the 1st Annual Vibe Music Fest and for the Michael Vick
shoe release promotional event sponsored by NIKE. My work has been featured in
Salon Sense Magazine and Barbers Only Magazine. I also offer classes independently
to stylists and barbers interested in capturing the distinctive flair I bring
to the hair industry. In my spare time I enjoy doing things that keep my creative
juices flowing like, modeling and making music. My love for hip hop prompted me
to create my own song and music video that fuses the world of entertainment together
with the art of styling hair. My
profession has allowed me the opportunity to service several celebrities in the
world of sports and entertainment like: Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Irvin, Alan
Iverson, 112, the Ying Yang Twins, and Idris Elba. Despite all the awards I've
won and celebrities I've met, I am most proud of the time I spend giving back
to the community. It's my way of saying thank you to all my loyal customers and
also to encourage those who have been blessed to share their blessings with someone
less fortunate. I have worked with the Hosea Williams Feed the Homeless program
every year since 1997. Every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and King Holiday, I volunteer
to cut and style hair for homeless and underprivileged people. After they receive
a good meal and clean clothes, we give them a new image. It is my belief that
your hair creates the foundation for self-esteem. One of my biggest joys is seeing
them get out of the chair feeling and looking better than they did when they came
in. My greatest inspiration
has come from my family. They have supported me since I was young and instilled
confidence in me. I have a special interest in children and I try to be a role
model for my nieces and nephews. I often bring them along with me to the hair
competitions to show them that you can be successful and gain recognition for
doing something positive. I want them to grow up and become leaders and role models
themselves. I try to encourage and inspire young people to find their special
talents and become the best at what they do. I feel like I have accomplished my
goal when I see a young person get excited about cutting hair and tell me I'm
the reason they want to become a barber when they grow up.
